Dr. Mike Huntington, a retired radiation oncologist who worked at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, said the path to implementing a universal healthcare system that serves everyone may be best represented at the state level.

“Canada did it province by province back in the 1960s and 1970s. They faced lower opposition than we’re facing now because of the (insurance) establishment that’s so strong, but also Congress is really stuck in the mud. We’re still working at the Congressional level. Rep. Ro Khanna introduced a bill that would allow states to create their own universal healthcare systems. That bill would create waivers so states would not be hampered by (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974) restrictions.”
