We had the opportunity to speak with June Chung, deputy legislative officer at Gov. Wes Moore’s legislative office, about the governor’s health policy priorities at the 2023 Maryland State of Reform Health Policy Conference earlier this year. Chung said the office has two central goals: modernizing Maryland’s public health system and responding to the behavioral health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She considers the passage of bills to create state public health and behavioral health commissions to be legislative successes from the 2023 session.

“What I’m looking forward to in the next session is that we’ll actually have time to prepare and really dig into policy issues, and sort of work together and build partnerships, and just be better prepared for the upcoming session.”
