John Burruss, MD, is the CEO of Metrocare Services, a provider in Texas serving those with mental disabilities. At the 2022 North Texas State of Reform Health Policy Conference last fall, Burruss sat down with us to discuss what he’s watching in the state’s healthcare space. He discussed the positive impact that community behavioral health clinics (CCBHCs) have had on the state, noting that his organization has received funding from the federal government to continue its work implementing CCBHCs.

He also emphasized the state’s new 1115 waiver and the “whole array of services” that the updated waiver provides. As the leader of an organization focused on serving those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Burruss is excited about the new opportunities the waiver presents through its specific payment programs.

“Everything from getting people off the streets, to getting them the right treatments—whether it’s medication or otherwise—to having the long-term supports for them is what we’re always focused on.”
