What They’re Watching: Tom Sebastian, Compass Health

Tom Sebastian is the President and CEO of Compass Health, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing behavioral health in the Northwest. He joins us in this edition of “What They’re Watching” to discuss treating the whole person.

So I think the biggest trend we’re tracking is the movement to truly integrate care to treat the whole person. This is really a transformational innovation that’s going on and we want to take full advantage of it. With the ACA, mental health conditions and substance use disorders have really been legitimized as genuine health conditions. And we now have infrastructure through the 1115 waiver and other innovations coming through the Health Care Authority to really transform care around the whole person. So moving away from this fragmented, siloed, dysfunctional system where people play hide-and-seek, it’s this game of hide-and-seek to find the care that you need, to one that truly is what I would say is a no-wrong-door kind of system. So whether you’re entering through your primary care provider, a specialty health care provider, a social service provider, or a behavioral health care provider, that all your needs are assessed and we have a system in place to address all those needs. And I think that’s what we’re really on the cusp of.
