Sutter Health’s Stephen Lockhart named a CMO to Know

Becker’s Hospital Review has named Stephen Lockhart, MD, PhD, as one of its 100 Hospital and Health System’s CMOs to Know.  Lockhart became the CMO of Sutter Health in 2015, after serving as the East Bay Region CMO. Prior to joining Sutter in 2009, he served as Medical Director of Surgical Services at California Pacific Medical Center.

Lockhart is a board-certified anesthesiologist and Rhodes Scholar. He received his Master Degree in Economics from Oxford University, and M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell.

Sutter Health issued a written statement about the recognition:

Dr. Lockhart oversees patient-care quality and safety, research and education for the not-for-profit healthcare network. He brings to his role more than 30 years of healthcare experience and extensive knowledge as an administrator, board-certified anesthesiologist, university professor, published author, and nationally recognized environmentalist and humanitarian.

This distinction is one of the many accolades Dr. Lockhart has received during his career. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by Washington University in 2015, and has been recognized for his work outside of medicine.  He was named a Champion of Change by the Obama Administration for his work in environmental conservation. He currently serves on the boards of REI and NatureBridge, and is the Vice-Chair of the National Parks Conservation Association.
