On behalf of the sponsors and board of directors of Providence Health & Services, we are honored to announce that Rod Hochman, MD, will serve as our next president & CEO, effective July 1, 2013.
With 30 years of clinical and executive leadership experience, Rod is the right leader to continue our transformational work in the delivery of health care. Most important to us, Rod has a deep passion for our Mission, vision and values and demonstrates that passion in all that he does.
Before serving as group president at Providence, Rod practiced his specialty of rheumatology, managed hospitals and health systems, including Swedish, taught medical students, negotiated and successfully executed managed care contracts, and led medical groups. As president & CEO of Swedish, Rod reimagined the organization’s approach to community benefit and community service, firmly establishing Swedish as a true partner to every person in every community served. Additionally, Rod has worked on both coasts and has served as a board member on national public and private organizations, most recently Dignity Health. As a result of his many years of leadership, Rod is well-known nationally, which will help ensure Providence continues to build influence, especially in advocating for policies that support our Mission and patient-centered vision and strategy.
We are also grateful to Mike Butler, whom Rod has asked to serve in a broader role as president of operations and services. Mike has infused our culture with a strong sense of Mission and optimism, always drawing on our heritage stories and deep roots in Catholic health care to help us live by our values as we continue through times of challenging change. And thanks to Mike, Providence remains one of the most operationally disciplined, financially stable and strategically well-positioned health systems in the nation.
And we would be remiss if we didn’t thank the board’s selection committee that conducted a thorough evaluation of our exceptional candidates. The committee conducted in-depth interviews with the candidates and tapped many other sources of information to develop their recommendation to the board; a recommendation that was adopted unanimously by the board and sponsors.
Throughout the year, we’ll take time to celebrate the 15 years of exceptional service John Koster, MD, has given Providence. John has provided transformational leadership for Providence by championing and establishing a forward-looking core strategy – One Ministry Committed to Excellence – and an effective strategic plan that will enable us to strengthen our Mission.
Together, John, Rod and Mike have positioned Providence well. We are especially impressed with the true partnership Rod and Mike have formed working together to ensure success across all facets of our ministry. We are deeply grateful to John, who will continue to work with Rod and Mike to ensure a seamless transition.
We look forward to hearing more from Rod in the coming weeks and months leading up to July 1, when we continue our 156 year journey under his leadership. Together Rod, Mike and our management team will continue to strengthen the Mission in every community we serve. Thank you for all that you do in support of our Mission.
Sr. Anita Butler
