Oregon’s Department of Human Services to Hold Summer Town Hall Meetings

Beginning in Portland today, Oregon’s Department of Human Services (DHS) will hold a series of summer town hall meetings around the state. The goals of these meetings are to provide an overview of the agency’s work, share its priorities for the 2015–17 biennium, and listen to feedback from the community.

Topics will include child welfare, aging and people with disabilities, developmental disability services as well as economic and nutrition assistance.

The Department is advancing its part of the Oregon Health Authority’s “one department, one mission, one vision” model which focuses on outcomes and results versus its traditional role as a regulatory and compliance agency. We’ve seen the Oregon Health Authority’s commitment to that through Coordinated Care Organization performance measure reporting. Human services funding is usually fragmented in states (especially neighboring Washington) and there’s hope of streamlining the process so the agency can use its resources more effectively.

DHS has also shared some trends that impact services they offer (and the wider healthcare and human services sectors): Oregon’s fast-growing population of older adults, increasing numbers of people with disabilities, increased racial and ethnic diversity, slower pace of economic recovery especially in rural Oregon.

DHS Director Erinn Kelley-Siel and members of the DHS Executive Team are encouraging stakeholders to participate in these discussions about the agency’s current and forthcoming strategic efforts.
