HHS Nominee Vows to Recover Misspent CoverOregon Funds

HHS Nominee Sylvia Burwell vows to recover failed state exchange federal funds from CoverOregon, et al.:

Where the federal government and the taxpayer has had funds misused, we need to use the full extent of the law to get those funds back for the taxpayer.

Burwell is likely to be voted in by Memorial Day as head of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). President Obama’s nominee was met with “barrage of flattery” during initial confirmation hearings in Washington, D.C. Burwell is set to replace HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who announced her resignation following HealthCare.gov’s troubled launch.

Burwell brings ample experience. Former head of both the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Development Program and president of the Walmart Foundation.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D – MD) probed into the common challenges facing federal agency chiefs “money, management, and morale.” Sen. Mikulski continued: “Could you tell me the executive ability and experience you think you bring to this job that can help put arms around this huge bureaucracy, often siloed, often fragmented?”

First, I believe you need to start with setting goals defining roles and responsibilities. Part of that is a process that involves both listening as well as analytics and data. That’s the first step. The next step is building strong teams and giving them the tools to succeed
