Covered California welcomes new assistant general counsel and director of the Office of Legal Affairs

Allison Pease began her new position as assistant general counsel and director of the Office of Legal Affairs at Covered California on January 17th. Pease previously served as the deputy director of the Office of Legal Affairs, where she worked on complex healthcare law and policy.

Covered California is the state’s health insurance marketplace that offers affordable, high-quality health insurance from top insurance companies. Individuals who receive coverage through Covered California may also receive financial assistance on a sliding scale to reduce premium costs.

“Allison is an experienced leader with a great legal mind who has helped navigate Covered California through numerous legal issues for nearly 10 years,” Executive Director Jessica Altman said. “Her dedication to Covered California’s mission is evident through her work and in her passion for creating a solution-oriented and inclusive environment.”

Pease’s experience consists of public sector issues, such as conflicts of interest and open-meeting laws; complex healthcare laws and policies, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Acts; and personnel and Equal Employment Opportunity issues.

Pease replaced Brandon Ross, who started his position as chief deputy executive director and general counsel on December 1st of last year. Prior to his appointment, he served as the director of Covered California’s Office of Legal Affairs. Ross succeeded Kathleen Keeshan, who retired on November 30th of last year after serving Californians under Covered California for the last nine years of her career.

Pease graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles with a degree in critical theory and social justice. She also received a degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.
