Mike Sheldon has been named the new CEO for the Arizona State Hospital (ASH), building on more than a decade of behavioral health administrative experience in both the private and public sectors.

Sheldon has served as interim CEO at the 360-bed facility in Phoenix since May after serving as the chief operating officer since 2017. He previously oversaw operations at  two crisis observation and inpatient psychiatric facilities in Phoenix and Tucson.

“Few people have demonstrated a greater commitment to Arizona’s behavioral health system than Mike Sheldon,” said Don Herrington, interim director of ADHS, which oversees the state hospital. “That’s why I’m excited to have named Mike as the Arizona State Hospital’s new permanent CEO.”

As the CEO of ASH, Sheldon will also serve as a deputy director of ADHS.

With Sheldon in a leadership role, ASH received the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for Hospital Accreditation. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care and means ASH complies with the highest national standards for safety and quality of care and is committed to continually improving patient care.
