Rotto—who teaches public health at SDSU—said the pandemic has revealed a significant underfunding of California’s public health system and called for an increase in the public health workforce.

“As hardworking as everyone has been, they have been overwhelmed. And we know that we need more public health professionals … It’s something that I think the public recognizes, that the leadership of the county recognizes … I know that HHSA has advocated [for this] in the past and this Board of Supervisors seems to hear that and be supportive, and wants to look at what we can continue to do to build resiliency by having an adequate workforce.”
