Mandates on the rise in Maryland in response to increase in COVID cases

Over the course of 24 hours, 1,272 new COVID-19 cases and 16 new deaths were reported in Maryland. This comes the day after Gov. Larry Hogan’s vaccine mandate went into effect for Maryland nursing home and hospital employees.

The vaccine mandate from Gov. Hogan comes alongside a slew of other mandates to combat the rising coronavirus cases in the state.

Earlier this week, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced a new vaccination policy for city employees. The new policy, which will require city employees to be fully vaccinated by October 18th, or to produce a weekly negative COVID test result in order to report for work.

Mayor Scott said this in a statement:

“Protecting the health of our workforce, residents, and their loved ones is my top priority. As we continue to navigate this pandemic — all while working to restore critical in-person access and assistance for Baltimoreans — the steps we take today to slow the spread of COVID-19 and the Delta variant could not be more important,” 

With the FDA’s approval of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, MedStar Health will require COVID vaccines for all of its employees — from associates to board members — to be fully vaccinated by November 1st. 

The Maryland Board of Education recently approved an emergency mask mandate for students and teachers as they return to school. The emergency ban will be in effect for 180 days if approved by the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administration, Executive and Legislative Review in a vote scheduled for Sept. 14th.
