Waller talked about his successes in other states to bring to Michigan, creating cohorts of prisoners who want treatment and how to set prisoners up for success outside prison.
“I get asked a lot if there is one core aspect of addiction that we need to impart onto the community… It is really how we describe addiction. I think it is important to recognize that we don’t define addiction based on the presence or absence of a substance. We define it based on the behaviors associated with obtaining or using the substance. So if we can identify this population and stabilize their behaviors, then we don’t have to define it as active addiction. We can talk about it as remission and they can go on about their lives.”
