What They’re Watching: Laura McKeane

Laura McKeane, AllCare Health’s Oral Health Integration Manager, joins us in this edition of “What They’re Watching” to discuss the integration of oral health.

I manage the oral health for all of our Medicaid members for our three-county area in Curry, Jackson, Josephine, and the tip of Douglas Counties. We are really working on oral health integration. I think the first couple of years when the COOs started working with dental, we were all just trying to figure out the process and I think we’ve got it figured out now and it’s time to take it to the next level. And for us, that’s going to be oral health integration. And I’m a First Tooth Trainer, so I have trained probably 250 providers to do oral health assessments and apply fluoride varnish in the pediatric setting. And the reason we do this is we’re really passionate about getting the fluoride on the kids in the pediatric setting because they don’t go to the dentist, the kid’s that little. So if we can get that fluoride on and get them that base, that’s what we want to do.

So we actually are working with the Oregon Oral Health Coalition and we are going to be developing an education program to go in and teach these providers how to look in the mouth. It seems silly that these doctors, they look in the ears, they look in you know, they listen to the heart, but they don’t ever look in the mouth. So we want to teach them how to do that. And we want to teach them what to look for, and if necessary, to get them to their dental home. So that’s really what we’re going to focus on I think for 2018 is getting in to those family care doctors, the private practice doctors. Oral health is you know it’s so important to your overall health and that’s the message that we need to get out.
