Navajo Nation gets tougher on curfew violators during COVID-19 outbreak
Navajo Nation officials warn police will get tougher on residents who continue to ignore the daily 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew clamped on last week to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Navajo Nation Police will start issuing citations for residents who violate the order, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said.
“We’re seeing higher numbers each day because people continue to go out into public,” Nez said. “The only way we’re going to beat the virus is to stay home as home as much as possible.
The total number of positive novel coronavirus cases continues to climb on the Navajo Nation, which includes portions of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. Positive cases reached 241 as of Thursday – an increase of 27 cases since Wednesday, officials said.
There is now a total of eight confirmed deaths related to COVID-19, they said.
Navajo Nation is also working with FEMA to put in community testing labs to get test results out sooner, Nez said.
