The pandemic has shifted the politics and public opinion on health care. Where cost was a primary concern before COVID, now access to affordable innovations is top of consumers and policy makers’ minds. So, as a return to normalcy appears on the horizon, the intersection of cost pressures and innovation in pharmacy is becoming a primary topic of concern in health policy. This panel will offer insight into innovative strategies in reducing costs which could include formulary adjustments, strategies to increase the use of biosimilars, or other creative policy solutions.

Karen van Caulil joined the Florida Alliance for Healthcare Value in 2011 as the President & Chief Executive Officer. She leads this nationally recognized business coalition on health, overseeing all activities & operations including research projects, educational programs, conferences & member engagement. Dr. van Caulil previously served in leadership positions for the University of Central Florida College of Medicine & the Health Council of East Florida.
Dr. Omar Rashid is a Surgical Oncologist at Holy Cross Health. He earned a BS in Biochemistry at Dartmouth College & an MD-JD at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Rashid completed a legislative fellowship in the VA General Assembly for the House of Delegates Appropriations Committee, & is also a member of the Commonwealth of Virginia Bar, with collaborations on health policy advocacy at the State & Federal levels.
Wayne Winegarden is a Sr. Fellow in Business & Economics at the Pacific Research Institute. Dr. Winegarden’s policy research explores the connection between macroeconomic policies and economic outcomes, with a focus on fiscal policy, the health care industry, and the energy sector. Dr. Winegarden’s columns have been published in the Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Investor’s Business Daily, Forbes.com, & USA Today.
