“Payment reform I think is a big deal. Value-based payment, right now, is all the rage, and you are starting to see some of that come into Texas, as well as other parts of the country.

What I want to think about is, where is it going to be five years from now, ten years from now. I keep going back to reference based pricing, and different payment models because I think the industry and the landscape is going to change. Especially, if the single-payer freight train continues to come down the track, which some think it will depending on how 2020 turns out.”

In Oregon and Alaska, Oregon specifically, we have done a lot of value-based payment reform there working on the CCO models, Medicaid and public health. We have translated that into the commercial markets, and both individual and employer-based models as well. We are largely an employer population, so we have had a lot of success in that market there. The provider community has certainly been a huge piece of that and in order for payment reform to work all sides really need to come together, one side cannot dictate to the other what needs to happen.

“We have had a lot of success and luck in other markets around the country and I think Texas is ripe for that as well.”
