What They’re Watching: Kevin Barry
Kevin Barry, CEO of the Alaska Surgery Center, joins us in this edition of “What They’re Watching” to discuss reducing costs for surgeries.
I think the biggest thing for us is what they’re doing with the state employees. Are they going to allow access to everybody to provide the care to these people? Some of the other trends that we have is the cost, that it costs us to provide this care. Implants are a drastic cost increaser for any surgery, supplies getting them up here, that’s the biggest things. But in the end it’s when the insurance companies, the payors, decide to make a change and we’re not notified but we can’t adjust to it fast enough to help our patients.
We have a lot of internal initiatives ourselves and we’re constantly trying to drive the price down for the patient, really looking at where we can reduce the amount of implants we use, talking with our providers to see if they can come up with a plan of what’s best for all of them to use. That’s a big thing we’re working on right now. The other part is utilizing our rooms and our teams efficiently. We try to get our patients in as quickly as they need to be, you turn around and make sure they and their families have a great experience, that’s the biggest outcome.
