What They’re Watching: Hon. Dustin Burrows

Texas State Representative Dustin Burrows joins us in this edition of What They’re Watching to discuss price competition as a way to control increasing costs.

So, at the end of the day I think thereꞌs a ton of different parts of the ACA and all I can tell you is since they actually put it into place weꞌve seen insurance premiums skyrocket. I know thereꞌre some popular aspects to it and not popular aspects to it, but at the end of the day thereꞌre some things that are independent of it that we at the state level can actually do and accomplish. So at the end of the day if I look at the reason why healthcare costs have skyrocketed is most of us are not price sensitive. Weꞌre not actually shopping around looking for better prices. And, the number one reason that we donꞌt do that is we donꞌt have the information we need to know if there are procedures out there that we can actually look at prices. So, the first step to that is can we publish information online or have providers actually say what something costs, and then on the backend if weꞌre going to keep with all the health insurance, have an incentive so people actually go to a different provider and save some money and save the insurance companies some money. Theyꞌre going to get an incentive whether itꞌs through premium rebates or direct check if they actually go around. So, essentially price competition. To me, thatꞌs what we lack and thatꞌs what we need.
