What They’re Watching – Robert Anda, ACE Study co-founder
Robert Anda, MD, MS is co-founder of the seminal study on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE Study). His collaboration with Dr. Vincent Felitti at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego yielded a project which investigates trauma in childhood as an underlying cause of population health problems.
The ACE Study is currently used in 18 states and has been replicated for use globally by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Anda, who is a regular at our State of Reform conferences, talks to us about getting the health care community engaged in a discussion of “trauma-informed” care. Anda explains that there is a certain stigma or fear in communities about talking openly about child abuse, but such a dialogue is the first step in creating truly community-based practices. Communities working together to find innovative funding solutions and referral systems are critical to the success of program such as ACEs.
