What They’re Watching: Hon. Ed Hernandez

California state Senator Ed Hernandez joins us in this edition of What They’re Watching to discuss transparency in healthcare costs.

Well, first of all, we’re gonna reintroduce 1010, whatever the new bill number is, just to make sure that we continue the conversation. We’d like to get it across the governor’s desk and get a signature, ’cause I really believe if we’re going to control healthcare costs, a big segment of it is in the pharmaceutical industry. So, that’s the first thing we’re gonna do, but the second thing is, because it’s becoming such a hot topic nationwide, I hope it sparks that conversation, it continues, and other states follow.

I really believe that transparency is important, especially with regards to controlling all kinds of healthcare costs. Right now, why is it that if you look at a hip replacement in one particular hospital compared to another, it might be more expensive? Okay, are the outcomes any better? But yet, if the outcomes are the same, then why are we paying more? So, by having an all payers database, first of all, we have to figure out where we’re gonna house it, how we’re gonna look at the data. But more importantly, how do we make sure that we look at the outcomes and the value that the patient’s getting to whatever healthcare procedure they’re getting?
