SB 6270, “An act relating to health care professionals not being required to participate in any public or private third-party reimbursement program,” is gaining significant attention in Olympia as of late. Introduced by Sen. Randi Becker (R-Eatonville), this “Right to Contract” bill clarifies the Uniform Disciplinary Act (UDA) by explicitly stating that health care professionals cannot be required to participate in a public or private third-party reimbursement program as a condition of licensure. NH Map

Over the weekend, I read this interesting snippet from the New Hampshire Union Leader, the state’s largest daily.  New Hampshire is working through it’s contracting process to contract with a health plan for a managed care service covering it’s Medicaid lives.

What I thought was interesting were the subtle differences and similarities to what’s been happening in Washington.  Here are a few. (more…)

Admittedly, I have yet to watch one of the nineteen Republican primary debates in its entirety.  However, there was a clip from last night’s Florida debate that caught my attention — Mitt Romney defended the Massachusetts individual mandate against former Senator Rick Santorum’s criticism: (more…)

VALLEY GENERAL HOSPITAL: PUBLIC NO MORE?

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012
about_us_photo2

In 2010, Snohomish County Public Hospital District #2 entered into a 30-year lease agreement with Swedish, a Washington non-profit organization, to operate Stevens Hospital in Edmonds due to severe budgetary concerns. The partnership was the first of its kind in the state. Now, Valley General Hospital, a public hospital in Monroe, is also looking to lease the hospital to offset financial woes — this time to an out-of-state for-profit organization:

Taxpayer- supported Valley General Hospital is on the verge of approving a deal that would allow a for-profit health care organization to lease the hospital for 40 years.

Before that happens, the public will get a chance to hear a report by an outside consultant about the deal and ask questions about its findings during a meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the hospital.

The report by Wipfli, a consulting firm of certified public accountants, is expected to be posted on the hospital’s website Tuesday.

If approved, the deal between the Monroe hospital and Franklin, Tenn.-based Capella Healthcare would mark the first time that organization has partnered with a public hospital, said Mike Liepman, Valley General’s chief executive.

On Monday, Jay Inslee addressed the WSMA Legislative Conference attended by about 140 physicians and practice administrators.

Some folks commented at our State of Reform event that Jay appeared to be very strong on federal issues, but less so on state health care issues.  In fact, a number of folks who will be supporting Inslee this fall commented to me that they were concerned that he hadn’t apparently spent enough time on state health care issues, based upon his speech at our event. Jon Stewart

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night. It might seem like an unlikely venue for a fruitful discussion on health care, but they actually had a decent conversation on the basics of the Affordable Care Act.
